The other night I was watching Modern Family and part of the the episode focused on Claire and her definition of the fine balance between being a manager and a friend ( http://www.hulu.com/watch/745403 …. go to 5:08). Love it!
This is one of the hardest things new managers must deal with when they have been promoted and are now supervising/managing people they were once peers. I call it balancing the BOSS|BUD blur.
It can happen to people who have been in management for years as well. The intense need to be liked and accepted makes it hard to hold people accountable and communicate unpopular business decisions. I love this article from Peter Bregman, How to Have Friends at Work When You’re the Boss. Share it with anyone you know who is moving into a leadership role the first time.
